How to Communicate Your Design to a Factory: References, Spec Sheets, and Common Mistakes

The single biggest cause of prototype revisions is not engineering complexity — it is miscommunication between the brand and the factory. A vague sketch, an ambiguous reference photo, or a missing dimension can send a mold worth $500-800 back for re-machining.

After developing custom molds for 500+ brands, here is exactly how to communicate your eyewear design so the factory builds what you actually want — the first time.


The Four Levels of Design Communication

Not all brands arrive with the same preparation. The more you move toward a complete spec, the faster and cheaper your mold development will be.

Level 1 — Full Spec. You have a 3D CAD file, dimensioned drawings, material and hardware specifications. The factory needs nothing else from you; the design is ready for mold making. Expect 0-1 revision rounds.

Level 2 — Good Reference. You have a physical reference frame plus clear notes on what to keep and what to change. The factory needs confirmation on which dimensions stay and which change. Expect 1-2 revision rounds.

Level 3 — Visual Only. You have photos, sketches, or a mood board. The factory needs you to fill in dimensional specifications. Expect 2-3 revision rounds.

Level 4 — Concept Only. Your brief is “something like a classic round frame but more modern.” The factory needs everything from you — expect an extended design consultation and 3 or more revision rounds.

The gap between Level 4 and Level 1 is not talent — it is information. The paragraphs below tell you exactly what to prepare.


The Four Groups of Information Your Factory Needs

1. Material and Dimensions: What It’s Made Of and How Big

You do not need a complete engineering drawing. But four numbers matter: lens width, bridge width, temple length, and total frame width. Add your material choice — acetate, metal, titanium, or TR90 — and the factory can begin feasibility assessment.

If you have a physical reference frame, the strongest move is to send it to the factory for 3D scanning. That captures every dimension precisely — more accurately than any photo or verbal description. You can then specify changes: “same bridge, temples 5mm longer,” “same lens shape, 3mm wider overall.”

2. Shape and Fit: What It Looks Like and Who It’s For

Describe the silhouette you want: round, square, cat-eye, aviator, geometric, or something else. Then say who it is for. This matters more than most brands realize — a frame that fits a European face (narrower bridge, higher nose) will not fit an Asian face well. Specify your primary market, and the factory will adjust bridge width and face-form curvature accordingly.

3. Hardware and Finish: The Details That Define Quality

Hinge type — standard three-barrel, five-barrel, or spring hinge — determines how the frame feels when it opens and closes. Hinge finish — gold, silver, rose gold, or gunmetal — must coordinate with your frame color and brand identity. Surface treatment — high gloss, satin matte, or a combination — and whether the frame is hand-polished or barrel-polished only, is the difference between a 50retailfeelanda50retailfeelanda200 retail feel.

Specify these at the same time as frame color. A warm tortoiseshell frame with silver hardware looks mismatched; changing hardware after production starts means remaking frames.

4. Reference Photos: A Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words

Most brands send Pinterest boards. Most Pinterest boards are useless to a factory — a front-facing photo of a model wearing sunglasses reveals nothing about the temple design, bridge construction, nose pad area, or hinge detail.

A useful reference set contains five to six photos:

  1. Front view — frame on a white background, straight-on, no model
  2. Side view — temple fully visible, showing curvature
  3. 45-degree angle — shows front curvature and temple attachment
  4. Temple detail — close-up of the hinge area and temple tip
  5. Bridge detail — close-up of the nose bridge construction
  6. Interior view — the temple interior, showing any branding or detail features

Even better: mark up the photos with notes. “Keep this bridge width.” “Make temple 5mm shorter.” “Thicker frame front like this.” The factory then has no room for guesswork.


The Most Common Communication Mistakes

Mistake 1: “Just Make It Look Premium”

“Premium” means different things to different people. To one brand it means high-gloss hand polish; to another it means matte finish and visible material texture. Describe the specific quality you want, not the feeling.

Say instead: “High-gloss hand-polished finish like Mazzucchelli acetate. Visible tortoiseshell grain. Warm tactile feel — not cold like injection plastic.”

Mistake 2: Mixing References Without Notes

Sending five reference frames with no annotation says “I like all of these.” The factory picks one and runs with it — often not the one you meant.

Say instead: “Frame shape like Reference A. Bridge width like Reference B. Temple design like Reference C. Finish quality like Reference D.”

Mistake 3: Ignoring Target Market Fit

A frame that fits a European face will not fit an Asian face well. Nose bridge width and temple-to-ear distance differ by market. Specify your primary market up front.

Mistake 4: Forgetting About Lens Thickness

If your brand uses prescription lenses, tell the factory the expected lens thickness at the edge. A frame designed for thin plano lenses may not accommodate a -6.00 prescription lens — the lens will sit proud of the frame or the frame must be reinforced.

Mistake 5: Approving CAD Without Printing It

A frame that looks perfectly proportioned on a 27-inch monitor can look enormous when held to your face. Print the CAD at actual size, cut it out, and test it physically before approving.


When to Say “I Trust Your Judgment”

There is a point where over-specifying hurts more than it helps. If you find yourself specifying the exact radius of a temple tip curve or the precise angle of a hinge recess, stop. These are manufacturing decisions that the factory’s engineers are better qualified to make.

You should specify: shape, proportions, fit, material, finish quality, and the aesthetic intent.

You should let the factory decide: tool paths, polishing sequence, hinge recess depth tolerance, mold gate position, and other manufacturing-level parameters.

The best brand-factory relationships are built on this boundary: the brand owns the vision, the factory owns the execution.
